The history of A&P in Canada

Today on our new Lost Retail in the GTA series, I'll be talking briefly about the history of the former American supermarket chain, A&P's Canadian operations. A&P operated stores under various banners, including A&P, Dominion, and discount store, Food Basics, in Canada until 2005, selling their Canadian operations to Metro, whom rebranded most of the stores as Metro in 2008.

History of A&P Canada


A&P started their Canadian operations in 1927, opening their first store in Canada in Montreal. They used to also have stores in Ontario and Quebec, but in 1984, they decided to pull out of the Quebec market. In 1985, they acquired the Dominion chain of stores and sold their stores outside of Ontario to various buyers.A&P also purchased the  Miracle Food Mart and Ultra Food Mart chains in 1989, and The Barn Markets chain, in 1995. Also that same year, A&P opened its first discount store, Food Basics.On July 19, 2005, Metro brought A&P Canada for $1.7 billion. In 2008, Metro rebranded all of the A&Ps, Barn Market, Miracle Food Mart, and Dominion stores under the Metro name ending A&P's 81 years of operation in Canada. Food Basics, however wasn't rebranded because it's a discount store.

Today

Today, Metro continues to operate a majority of A&P's old stores under their namesake banner and discount stores under the Food Basics name, as well as having new-built stores of their own. Unfortunately, some of the old A&P/Dominion stores either closed completely, or rebranded as Food Basics. Most of these old A&P stores has been untouched by Metro and still retain older A&P/Dominion decor, others has since been renovated by Metro to their own decor packages.

    Cool to know that A&P Canada kinda-sorta lives on, since it never went bankrupt but simply had a name change! Frankly I'm surprised that the name change didn't occur immediately after the sale in 2005; I wouldn't have expected A&P to go ahead and sell the naming rights to Metro along with the stores themselves. Of course, I suppose it could very well have been the plan to rename from the beginning, and it simply took until 2008 for the sale to be completely consummated and a transition period to go by, etc....

      Sorry fot the late response. I don't think A&P gabe the naming rights to Metro for the stores. It just took until 2008 for Metro to rebrand their stores.

Knob Hill Farms was a chain of 10 warehouse-like “food terminals” in the Toronto area. These stores were pretty large for a supermarket at the time they operated ranging from 65,000 sqft to a gigantic 335,000 sqft. Due to financial issues, Knob Hill Farms closed/sold all their stores in 2000. History Knob Hill Farms was founded in 1954 by Steve Stavro as a more conventional grocery chain operating 9 markets in Toronto. It wasn’t until 1963 that Stravro opened his first 65,000 sqft “food terminal” in Markham. In 1971, Knob Hill Farms expanded into Pickering with its second terminal. Knob Hill Farms than opened their first Toronto store  in 1975 and second Toronto terminal opened in 1977. Their fifth store, which was billed as the largest food store in North America at the time, opened in 1978 in Mississauga....

Store Facts: No Frills Dixie Outlet Mall

I’m starting a new series called store facts where I talk about the history of a particular location of a chain, the layout of the store and some key points about the location. I’ll be talking about the No Frills located at Dixie outlet Mall in Mississauga. This location has an interesting past as it was previously a Knob Hill Farm Food Terminal. If you are not familiar with that chain, you can view my post here . Background This location originally opened as a two-level Knob Hill Food Terminal, which was down sized a few years after it opened. Knob Hill closed down all their stores in 2001 and Loblaws brought a couple of the stores and some, like this one were converted to a No Frills franchise in 2001. I’m not too sure which decor this store had originally, but I’m guessing Smile, which it had until 2016 when it was renovated Very yellow. 165 The Source stores to re-brand as Best Buy Express

Best Buy Express Logo  Image Credit: Best Buy Back in January of this year, Bell announced a partnership with Best Buy to convert 165 The Source locations to the Best Buy Express banner by the end of this year with locations that do not get converted closing. For those who don't know, The Source started out as the Canadian branch of RadioShack before being acquired by Circuit City in 2005 and being rebranded to The Source by Circuit City. Then in 2009, Bell acquired the chain and re-named it The Source. Some The Source locations in the blog’s coverage area are running a pre-renovation sale, so I assume that’s in preparation for the conversion to Best Buy Express. It will be interesting to see how these stores will look like in person. The first location in Surrey BC opened today according to a  press release.  According to the one image at that link, it looks largely the same as a typical remodeled The Source location, just with Best Buy branding just as I predicted....
